The Adelphi University volleyball team played host to sixth seeded NYIT in the first round of the East Coast Conference tournament. The number three ranked Panthers used 12 service aces to pick up a 3-1 win and advance to the semifinals. The win gives Adelphi an overall record of 27-10, while NYIT ends their season at 12-26.
The Panthers and NYIT went back and forth early in game one, however with the Panthers ahead 13-11 an NYIT service error gave Heather Mau serve. Adelphi reeled off six unanswered points off of Mau serve's to take a 20-11 lead on the way to a 25-17 win.
Game two was extremely close as the Bears edged out Adelphi in extra points, 27-25. The Panthers trailed 18-14, but drew even at 23. From there it was tight until an Adelphi attack error gave NYIT a 26-25 lead and a Rebecca Lowe kill put the game away.
Adelphi led early in game three, before NYIT game back and took a 14-11 lead. The Panthers responded with a eight of the next 11 points to take a 19-17 advantage on an Ashley Harkins service ace en route to a 25-20 win.
The fourth game was all Adelphi as the Panthers built an early 13-8 lead on the way to a 25-13 game win and a 3-1 match victory.
Samantha Johnston led the way for Adelphi with 15 kills and 19 digs, while Heather Mau had a game-high 42 assists, four service aces and six digs. Amy Williams led all players with 22 digs, while Harkins had a game-high five service aces.
Adelphi returns to action on Friday, November 14 when they compete in the semifinals of the ECC tournament.
