The Adelphi University volleyball played host to East Coast Conference rival Queens College on Thursday, October 9. The Panthers won a hard fought first two games, 25-21 and 25-20, before coasting to a 3-0 victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 15-7 overall and 6-3 in ECC play, while Queens falls to 14-6 and 5-3.
Adelphi jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the first game, scoring four straight points off of Amy Williams serves. Queens fought back closing to within three points, 19-16, on a Natalie Edward kill, but could get no closer as a Samantha Johnston kill closed the door on game one.
Game two was much tighter at the start with the Panthers taking an early edge, 2-0, but never pushing the gap any farther then two points up until 10-8. From there Adelphi extended their lead to 12-8 thanks to back-to-back kills from Hilary Pavels. The Panthers blew the game open, reeling off five of the next seven points to take a commanding 17-10 lead. Again Queens clawed back into the game, cutting the Adelphi advantage to four, 21-17, before falling 25-20.
The Panthers really got rolling in game three, sprinting out to a 14-4 lead on the back of three Johnston kills, and two kills from both Pavels and Audrey Goss. The Knights bounced back, getting as close as 17-10, before seven straight Johnston serves and a Patawe Simms kill ended the game, 25-10.
Pavels led all players with a game-high 16 kills, while Johnston chipped in 10. Williams had a game-high 17 digs, while three other Panthers reached double figures as Johnston had 15, Heather Mau with 11 and Jennifer McKenna with 10. Mau also added a game-high 35 assists.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, October 11 when they play host to future Northeast-10 opponents Stonehill and Franklin Pierce.
