The Adelphi University volleyball team played host to East Coast Conference rival Dowling College on Tuesday, October 28. The Panthers were knotted at one game apiece with the Golden Lions before falling 3-1. The loss drops Adelphi to 22-9 overall and 9-4 in ECC action, while Dowling remains unbeaten in conference play at 14-0 and are 27-5 overall.
Adelphi kept the first game close, never trailing by more then five and pulling to within three at 24-21 on a Samantha Johnston kill, before falling 25-21. Game two was all Adelphi as the Panthers took an early 7-2 lead. Dowling would not go quietly, pulling to within one point, 21-20 on a Patawe Simms attack error. However, Adelphi rallied and scored the next four points to pick up a 25-20 win.
Game three was again back and forth as the Panthers took a 4-1 lead on an Ashley Harkins kill. Dowling responsed with a 7-1 run to move out to a 8-5 lead thanks to a Patricja Klekotka kill. Adelphi countered with a 10-4 run of their own to take back the lead and extend it to three, 15-12, on an Audrey Goss kill. The Panthers enjoyed their biggest lead of the game, 19-13 but could not hold on, as Dowling out scored Adelphi 12-3 down the stretch to take the game, 25-22.
Dowling took advantage of the Panthers slow start in game four, taking a 9-2 lead. From there the Golden Lions extended their lead to 22-9, before securing a 25-16 victory.
Goss led the Panthers with 10 kills, while Johnston chipped in nine and Kelsey Hackett had eight. Amy Williams had a team-high 15 digs, while Heather Mau picked up a game-high 33 assists.
Adelphi returns to action on October 30 when they travel to Bronxville, New York for a 7:00 pm meeting with Concordia College.
