Win Over Mercy Results in Sixth Straight Win for Panthers.

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - The Adelphi Volleyball team traveled to Dobbs Ferry, New York last night, October 23 for an ECC matchup against the Mavericks of Mercy College. Despite a close first game, the Panthers swept the match to put them at the 20 win mark. The victory advances their record to 20-7, 9-3 in ECC action while the Mavericks fall to 6-19, 1-11 in ECC play.

The first set began with a Mercy lead at 5-2. The Panthers came back to tie the game at eight but still trailed late in the match, 19-18. Adelphi then tied it up at 24, and behind the strength of senior Samantha Johnston, and was victorious in their efforts as they took the first set 26-24.

In the second set, the Panthers came out to a fast start leading 7-3. As the match continued, Adelphi doubled their points while the Mavericks added just two to set the score at 14-5. Mercy would fall further behind as the game wound down and would eventually lose (25-12) letting Adelphi go up 2-0. In the third and final set, the Panthers made quick work of the Mavericks early on as they took a commanding 11-4 lead and never looked back as the third set was won by a score of 25-11.

The Panthers committed 10 errors in the first set, but straightened their game out as they tallied just seven in the next two sets combine. Junior Heather Mau had a game high of 24 assists while Johnston tallied nine kills and juniors Kelsey Hackett and Audrey Goss chipped in with eight and seven respectively.

Adelphi returns to action when they travel to East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania to take part in the ESU Tournament hosted by East Stroudsburg University on October 24-25. The Panthers play UMass Lowell first, today at 6 pm, and then face a double header on Friday against host ESU at 11 am and Bowie State at 3 pm.
