Women's Soccer Shuts Down Bridgeport, 4-0

Oct. 18, 2008

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - Back-to-back goals in the first three minutes of play set the tone as the Adelphi University women's soccer team cruised to a 4-0 win over the University of Bridgeport this afternoon at Competition Field. The Panthers (11-3-1, 5-1 ECC) extend their win streak to eight, while the Purple Knights drop to 12-2-1 and 4-2 in the conference.

A cross from sophomore Brianne McDonnell set up the header by senior Erin Klimkowski in the second minute to put the Panthers up early. Less than 20 seconds later, junior Kayte Kinsley blasted a shot from the 18 yard line at 2:09 to push the lead to two. McDonnell extended the lead to 3-0 at 29:46 on a break away shot from 20 yards out which sailed past UB goalie Elina Yletyinen.

The Panther scored three goals on just five first-half shots. In comparison, the Purple Knights managed 12 shots, but freshman goalkeeper Dorothy Connolly was impressive at the net, making ten saves.

Adelphi's defense picked up in the second half, holding UB to just three shots. The final Panther goal actually came by way of a Bridgeport own goal. Junior Amanda Popoli's corner kick connected with Kinsley, but her shot richoted off the defender closest to the goalkeeper and into the net.

Connolly finished with 12 saves in the contest while Yletyinen had two.

This marked the first win for the Panthers over the Purple Knights since the 2005 season. Adelphi now leads the all-time series 6-3-1.

The Panthers are back in action on Friday, October 24, when they host Mercy College at 6:00 p.m.
