The Adelphi University volleyball team played host to both Stonehill College and Franklin Pierce University in non-conference action on Saturday, October 11. The Panthers won six out of the seven sets played on the day, picking up a 3-0 win over Franklin Pierce and a 3-1 victory over Stonehill. The wins raise Adelphi's record to 17-7 overall.
Adelphi vs. Stonehill
Adelphi wasted no time, taking a 6-1 lead thanks to three straight service aces from Samantha Johnston. Stonehill responded with eight of the next 14 points to pull within three, 12-9. From there the Panthers used a four point spurt to take a 16-9 lead thanks to an Audrey Goss kill, that helped Adelphi secure a 25-17 game one win.
The Panthers came out strong in the second game, jumping out to a 9-2 lead on the strength of three Kathleen Carney kills. The Skyhawks showed signs of life as Stonehill cut the margin to five, 13-8, before Adelphi reeled off five of the next nine to take an 18-12 lead on the way to a 25-15 game two win.
The third game was a back and forth battle that saw Stonehill come out on top, 25-23. However the fourth set was status quo as Adelphi used a 7-1 run to take a 16-9 edge on the way to a 25-14 fourth game win.
Carney led all players with 15 kills, while Hilary Pavels chipped in 14 and Goss added 12. Amy Williams had a game-high 16 digs and teammate Johnston picked up 15 as Heather Mau posted 49 assists.
Adelphi vs. Franklin Pierce
Franklin Pierce played Adelphi tight for the first half of game one, pulling to wihtin one point on several occasions. However, with the score 10-9, the Ravens gave up a point on a service error, which sparked a 9-3 run, giving Adelphi a 19-12 lead and a 25-14 game one win.
The second game was a mirror image of the first and saw the Panthers leading 18-12. But Franklin Pierce would not go quietly, reeling off nine of the next 13 points to pull within one, 22-21. However, the Ravens would get no closer then 23-22 as miscues gave Adelphi a 25-23 win.
Franklin Pierce brought their game two momentum into the third game as they led 13-12, thanks to an Adelphi attacking error. From there the Panthers took control as a Raven error gave Adelphi serve and two kills from both Goss and Carney made the score 17-13 on the way to a 25-16 victory.
Carney and Johnston both reached double figures with 11 and 10 kills respectively while Johnston added 10 digs. Williams had a game-high 15 digs and Heather Mau posted 35 assists.
Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, October 14 when they travel to Old Westbury, New York for a 7:00 pm meeting with NYIT.
