Men's Basketball Bounced By Bloomfield, 79-66

Bloomfield, NJ - The Adelphi University men's basketball team traveled to Bloomfield, New Jersey on Wednesday, January 9 to face Bloomfield College in a non-conference match-up. The Deacons led by six at the half, 34-28 and pulled away in the second period, pulling out a 79-66 win. The loss evens Adelphi's record at 6-6 overall, while Bloomfield improves to 11-7.

Bloomfield opened the game by holding Adelphi to just four points in the first seven minutes of action to move out to a 12-4 lead. Adelphi responded with five quick points to cut the Deacon edge to just three, 12-9 with 11:37 left in the first half.

With 6:31 on the clock an Adelphi three-point play from Dan Franchese pulled the Panthers back to within three points, 20-17. However a Bloomfield jumper on the next possesion sparked a 14-0 run that put the Deacons ahead 34-17 with just 2:43 left in the half. But the Panthers would not quit, scoring 11 unanswered points to close out the half trailing by just six, 34-28.

Bloomfield pushed out to a double-digit lead, 39-29, on a lay-up with 16:31 on the clock and led by as many as 14 points before Adelphi chopped the lead to six, 46-40, with 13:12 to play. But, that was as close as the Panthers would get as they pulled to within six on two other occasions in the second half before falling, 79-66.

Daye Gage led all players with 29 points on 9-12 shooting and 7-14 from the free throw line. Teammate Charles Smith also reached the 20-point mark, scoring 21 points in the win.

Richard Byrd led the Panthers with 12 points, while Franchese chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds. Chris Diasparra also reached double figures scoring 10 points.

Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, January 12 when the play host to East Coast Conference opponent Queens College at 3:00 pm.
