Men's Basketball Tripped Up By Mercy, 47-46

Dobb's Ferry, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's basketball team traveled to Dobb's Ferry, New York to take on East Coast Conference (ECC) foe Mercy College. The Mavericks trailed by five at the half, but outscored Adelphi 26-20 in the second period to earn a 47-46 win. The victory improves Mercy to 4-9 overall and evened their record in ECC play at 3-3, while the Panthers fall to 6-5 overall and 4-3 in the league.

The Mavericks opened the game with a 16-5 run over the first 9:38, Adelphi responded by outscoring Mercy 19-3 over the next 7:03. The Panthers used a three-pointer from Richard Byrd to take a 24-19 lead, before going into the break up by a score of 26-21.

Mercy netted the first seven points of the second half, going ahead 28-26 on a Michael Marin three-pointer. The contest would see seven more ties and the lead changed hands four more times until the Mavericks went up 43-41 with 1:39 to go. After empty possessions and turnovers from each squad, Byrd knotted the game at 43-43 with 19 seconds remaining.

The game looked as though it might head for overtime, but Marin was sent to the free throw line and nailed both after he was fouled with four seconds left to all but seal the win.

Vince Jordan connected on 7-of-10 from the field and 3-of-7 at the free throw line, leading Mercy with 17 points. Marin added 12 points and five rebounds.

Byrd led Adelphi with 13 points on 4-of-10 from the field and 4-of-4 at the charity stripe. Sky Khaleel led all players with eight points, while Alvin Vivican chipped in nine points.

The Panthers return to action on January 9 when they travel to Bloomfield, New Jersey for a 7:00 pm meeting with Bloomfield.
