Women's Basketball Tops NYIT, 66-50

Garden City, N.Y. - Junior Serita Lee (Freeport, N.Y.) poured in 14 of her game-high 16 points in the first half to lead the Adelphi Uniersity women's basketball team to a 66-50 win over conference rival NYIT on Wednesday night at Woodruff Hall. The Panthers snap a two-game slump to improve to 9-10 overall and 7-5 in the ECC. The Lady Bears fall to 3-15 and 2-10 in the league.

Adelphi shot 53.6 percent from the field (15-of-28) while holding NYIT to just 8-of-25 (25.0 percent) as they cruised to a 37-22 half-time lead. After a close start and up by one, 5-4, at 15:57, the Panthers exploded on a 15-2 run over the next five minutes, capped by a layup by junior Danielle Parks (Galloway, N.J.), 20-6. The Lady Bears rallied with back-to-back three-pointers to cut the lead to eight, but the Panthers responded by pushing the margin to 18, 37-19, with 1:27 to go.

The Panthers continued their strong play in the second stanza with their lead growing to 21 points, 47-26, on a made basket by junior Jasmine Travers (Gaitersburg, Md) with 13:28 left in regulation. Despite going bucket for bucked with Adelphi for most of the half, NYIT was not able to close the double-digit gap. Junior Lisa Manetta (Glendale, N.Y.), who had 16 points on the night, nailed both foul shots in the final seconds to seal the victory, 66-50.

Adelphi dominated the boards, outrebounding NYIT, 50-36. Senior Gianna Smith (Hempstead, N.Y.) pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with six points and three steals. Lee had nine rebounds, while senior Ashley Andrews (Hempstead, N.Y.) collected a career-high seven boards and added four points and two blocks in her first collegiate start for the Panthers.

The Lady Bears were led by Tanisha Naughton with 12 points. Brittany Smith had nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Panthers are back in action this Saturday, February 2, as they travel to Bronxville, New York to take on Concordia College at 1:00 p.m.
