The Adelphi University men's basketball team played host to East Coast Conference (ECC) rival NYIT on Wednesday, January 30 in historic Woodruff Hall. The Panthers held the Bears to just 31 points on 21 percent shooting, picking up a 63-31 victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 11-7 overall and 8-4 in ECC play, while NYIT falls to 10-6 overall and 8-4 in the conference.
The Panthers used a 10-0 run in the first five and a half minutes of action to jump on the Bears early. NYIT responded with a 10-2 run, pulling to within two points, 12-10, with 7:32 left in the half. From there Adelphi's defense took over, holding NYIT to just five points the rest of the half, while the Panthers scored 15, entering halftime with a 27-15 edge.
The second half was all Adelphi, as the Panthers opened the action with a 17-4 run that lasted 7:50 and pushed Adelphi's bulge to 25 points, 44-19. From there the Panthers kept the pressure on, opening up the largest lead of the game, 61-29, with 1:43 to play on two Richard Byrd free throws, before collecting a 63-31 win.
Both Truman Montgomery and Daniel Berg scored seven points for the Bears, while Miguel Pierre-Fanfan pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
Alvin Vivican led the way for Adelphi with 21 points and four rebounds. Byrd chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds, while Chris Diasparra added nine points and seven boards.
The last time that Adelphi held an opponent to 31 points or less was in a 62-30 victory over Concordia College on March 4, 2006.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, February 2 when they travel to Bronxville, New York for a 3:00 pm meeting with Concordia.
