The Adelphi University men's basketball team traveled to Rockville Centre, New York on January 26 to take on East Coast Conference (ECC) rival Molloy College. The Panthers led by one at the half and extended that lead to five, picking up a 57-52 victory. The loss is the third in a row for the Lions as they fall to 8-9 overall and 6-5 in the ECC, While the Panthers improve to 10-7 and 7-4 in conference play.
Molloy and Adelphi kept it close in the first half with neither team taking more than a five point lead. A free throw by Michael Johnson put the Lions ahead by one (27-26) with 41 seconds left in the half. However, Adelphi answered back when Sky Khaleel notched two free throws to give the Panthers the 28-27 halftime lead.
Adelphi's Richard Byrd knocked down Adelphi's first shot of the second half and increased the Panther lead to four (31-27). Three minutes later, a tip-in by Glenn Martin evened the score at 33. Adelphi broke away again and as 11:36 remained on the clock, they held the five point advantage (43-38) thanks to a three-pointer by Arjan Perovic. Molloy kept fighting back and eventually tied the game at 52 after a lay-up by Vincet Falzone with 2:26 left. However, the Panthers scored the final five points of the game, on a Byrd jumper and three Alvin Vivican free throws to hang onto the 57-52 East Coast Conference victory.
Falzone led all players with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Martin finished the game with 13 points, while Carl Palmer and Girard Fitts each had seven points.
Khaleel led the Panthers with 13 points and added four rebounds, while Byrd chipped in nine points and Pat Luptowski scored eight. Chris Diasparra led Adelphi with seven rebounds.
Adelphi returns to action on January 30 when they host NYIT at 7:30 pm.
