Senior Gianna Smith went 12-of-14 from the field to register a career-high 30 points to lead the Adelphi University women's basketball team to a 77-57 conference win over Dowling College. The Panthers improve to 7-7 and 5-2 in the ECC, while the Golden Lions fall to 2-12 and 1-7.
Senior Mary Lepore added 15 points and seven rebounds, while junior Serita Lee contributed 12 points and a game-high 12 boards. Sophomore Jasmine Travers chipped in 10 points to go along with five steals.
Smith accounted for 16 of the team's 40 first half points, setting the tone for a 50 percent shooting effort for the Panthers. Dowling netted the first basket of the ballgame, but it was all Adelphi after that as they answered on a 16-2 run. The Panthers' lead ballooned to 20 points, 38-18, with 2:15 remaining.
The second half was more of the same with Adelphi maintaining a double-digit advantage throughout. Freshman Lekesha Harris netted a three-pointer with 1:42 on the clock, 77-53, for the Panthers' largest lead of the night.
The Panthers shot a season-high 50.9 percent on the night. They also held a slight 37-33 rebound advantage.
The Golden Lions were led by Molly Tubridy and Nikkeia Daniels, each with 14 points. Michelle Yawn had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Adelphi returns to action this Saturday, January 19, as they head to the University of Bridgeport for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
