The Adelphi University men's basketball team played host to East Coast Conference foe Queens College on Saturday, January 12. The Panthers led by just three at the half, 23-20, but held the Knights to 19 points in the second half, picking up a 54-39 victory. The win raises Adelphi's overall record to 7-6, and 4-3 in the ECC, while Queens falls to 2-11 overall and is still searching for their first conference win at 0-6.
The first half was a back and forth affair that featured five ties. The largest lead of the half was a four-point edge taken by Adelphi, 22-18, with four minutes to play. The Panthers would enter the locker room with a three-point edge, 23-20.
Adelphi took control in early in the second half and never let up. Over the first 11 minutes of the second period Adelphi outscored Queens, 24-9 to build an 18 points bulge, 47-29, that the Knights could not recover from, falling 54-39.
Maalik Oliver led the Knights with 14 points, while Mike Liander chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds.
Freshman Pat Luptowski led all players with 17 points, including hitting on 5-9 attempts from beyond the arc. Alvin Vivican chipped in 10 points and four rebounds, while Sky Khaleel added nine points and ripped down a game-high 12 boards.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, January 16 when they play host to Dowling College at 5:30 pm.
