The Adelphi University women's basketball team led by five with 4:01 remaining when the University of New Haven closed on a 9-0 run to clinch at 60-56 conference victory last night at Charger Gymnasium. The Chargers improve to 7-6 overall and 7-0 in the ECC, while the Panthers fall to 5-7 and 3-2 in league play.
The Panthers shot 48 percent from the field in the first half, with senior Gianna Smith (Hempstead, N.Y.) collecting all of her team-high 13 points in the first stanza. Adelph led 4-0 early on before UNH rallied on a 10-2 run to lead by four at 14:44. Sophomore Serita Lee (Freeport, N.Y.) tied it at 12 on a layup at 11:53. The game would remain close for the duration of the half, with seven ties and six lead changes. The Chargers had the last word as Lindsay Salt hit a jumper to knot the score at 27.
The lead see-sawed throughout the second half with New Haven pulling ahead by four, 37-33, with 14:14 on the clock. Adelphi would not back down and used a 14-5 run, capped by a basket from junior Jasmine Travers (Gaitersburg, MD) to lead, 47-42, at 8:45. The Chargers tied the game for the 14th time, 51-51, at 4:53, on a made shot by Brittney Wilkes. Senior Mary Lepore (Manhasset, N.Y.) connected for five of her 13 points to put the Panthers back up, 56-51, at 4:01. New Haven stepped up its defense, forcing five turnovers and hitting 3-of-5 from the field to pull ahead for good.
Adelphi held a slight 43-42 rebound advantage with Smith and Lee pullind down nine apiece. Junior Hannah Coen (Co.Galaway, Ireland) had eight boards.
The Chargers were led by Lauren Hood with 21 points and eight rebounds. Salt chipped in 10 points off the bench.
The Panthers return to action this Saturday, January 12, hosting Queens College at 5:30 p.m. The game will also celebrate NCAA Take A Kid To The Game Day with all children under 12 admitted free with an adult. The team will also be honoring local Girl Scout troups.
