New Hyde Park, N.Y. -
With three minutes showing on the clock junior midfielder Stephanie Cotter (Ridge, NY) fired in the game winning tally to lift the #22 nationally ranked Golden Lions over the Adelphi Panthers, 1-0, in East Coast Conference play on September 25. Dowling improves their overall record to 8-2 with a 2-0 hold in the ECC as the Panthers are handed their first conference loss (2-1) and drop to 5-2 on the season.
Shots were minimal in the intense conference battle with a majority of play bracketed between the two defenses. Play was heated with each team combating for the win; Dowling trying to upend the Panthers for the first time in program history while Adelphi was vying to hold their spot as the conference leader. Neither team was able to connect in the first forty-five as the board remained scoreless through the half.
Dowling picked up the ball control in the second half, but Adelphi would challenge with several threatening break-aways. With 3:06 remaining on the clock, Dowling was awarded a corner kick and Kristen Cipriano (Islip, NY) stepped up for the challenge. The Adelphi defense was there and attempted to clear the ball, however Cotter intercepted and found the back of the net.
Next up, Adelphi travels to Brookville, New York to take on C.W. Post on Saturday, September 29 at 12:00 noon.
