Senior Denise Auer (Holbrook, N.Y.) had two goals and an assist to lead the Adelphi University women's soccer team to a 5-0 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas this afternoon at Tully Field. The Panthers improve to 4-2 on the season and 1-0 in the ECC, while the Spartans drop to 2-7 and 0-1 in the league.
The Panthers dominated from start to finish, riddling the STAC defense with 46 shots. Freshman Brianne McDonnell (Commack, N.Y.) was first to score on a rebound shot, assisted by Auer in the 11th minute. Two minutes later, Auer scored on a corner from sophomore Amanda Popoli (South Salem, N.Y.) to make it a 2-0 game. Freshman Emily Dunne (Fairfield, CT) recorded her first goal in a Panther uniform at 42:28 to give Adelphi a 3-0 lead at intermission.
Auer tallied her second goal of the day in the 57th minute on a corner kick, one of 14 for the Panthers in the game. Junior Erin Klimkowski (Westbury, N.Y.) picked up the final point of the afternoon on a feed from senior Jacki Walsh (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) at 85:33.
Senior Christine Conway (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) was untested in the win, playing 60:17 minutes. Freshman Angela Matinale (Port Washington, N.Y.) came in with just under 29 minutes remaining. Jeannette Gibson made 23 stops for the Spartans in the loss.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, September 22, as they travel to NYIT for a 12 noon contest.
