The Adelphi men's soccer team played host to Stony Brook University on Thursday, September 13 at Belson Stadium in Queens, New York. The Panthers could not overcome an early Seawolves goal, falling 2-0. The win raises Stony Brook's record to 3-2 overall, while Adelphi is still searching for its first win at 0-5.
The first ten minutes of play was very back and forth, with neither team able to find the back of the net. In the 13th minute the Panther defense brought down a Stony Brook player just outside of the Penalty area, resulting in a Seawolve free kick. Petar Rakovic struck the ball from the left side of the 18-yard box, beating goalkeeper Shane Flanagan and giving Stony Brook a 1-0 lead.
Both teams played even the rest of the first half, giving the Seawolves a 1-0 edge at the half. At the 79:03 mark of the second half Stony Brook's Mahamadou Simpara put the game out of reach when he flicked a Michael Palacio drive into the back of the Panther net, making the score 2-0.
Val Charalambous had two quality chances in the second half, but missed the net on both opportunties. Late in the second period Oliver Skelding found himself in possesion of the ball just 10 yards from goal, but his well struck shot went wide left.
The Panthers return to action on Sunday, September 16 when they play host to Towson.
