A back and forth affair between Stonehill and Adelphi University ended when freshman Jessica Baisley (Shoreham-Wading, N.Y.) nailed home her first collegiate goal 8:48 in to the first overtime giving the Panthers (1-2) a thrilling 4-3 overtime win in the season opener for the Skyhawks (0-1).
The Panthers came out of the gate firing, scoring the first goal in 21 seconds, when senior Jacki Walsh (Ronkonkoma, N.Y) slipped the opening possession into Stonehill's net. Stonehill senior Meghan O'Brien (Stow, Mass.) blasted home a goal to tie the score shortly after and the Skyhawks took the lead 31:38 into the game when O'Brien kicked in another goal off Hilary Eckhardt's (Marshfield, Mass.) perfect placed throw-in.
Sophomore Caitlin Morrison (Beacon, N.Y), evened the score in the 38th minute. Both teams were desperate to score before the half and with one minute remaining Stonehill struck to take a 3-2 lead going into intermission.
Freshman Brianne McDonnell (Commack, N.Y.) knotted the score at 3 with an open net at 65:34, sending the match into overtime. Morrison recorded the assist on Baisley's game-winning heroics in the 99th minute to give the Panthers their first win of the season.
Senior Christine Conway (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) had five stops for Adelphi, while Ashley Eckhardt (Marshfield, Mass.) made seven saves for the Skyhawks.
Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, September 5, as they travel to Philadelphia, PA to take on Holy Family at 4:00 p.m.
