Garden City, N.Y. -
Baseball played host to Dowling on May 1 in an East Coast Conference match-up and were held to just seven hits and five runs in a 13-5 lost to the Golden Lions. The loss drops Adelphi to 27-13 overall and 18-5 in conference play, while Dowling improves to 20-15 overall and 15-7 in the ECC.
Dowling struck first, opening a 1-0 lead in the top of the second and adding three runs to it in the third. The Golden Lions kept the pressure on tacking on aa fifth run in the fifth, before Adelphi finally responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth on a Mike Colonna sacrifice fly that scored Ralph Tropiano and made the score 5-1.
The Panther's trailed 9-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth when Rob Paccione started the inning with a single and was driven in by a Tropiano double to center. That was followed by a Rob DeGennaro triple to center, which scored Tropiano and then Colonna came home on a Dowling error, making the score 9-4. But that was as close as Adelphi would get as Dowling set down three of the next four hitters to get out of the inning.
Tropiano led the Panthers at the plate, going 3-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Colonna chipped in two RBI.
Adelphi returns to action on May 2 when they travel to Oakdale, New York to warp-up the season series with Dowling.
