Baseball Falls to Franklin Pierce, 7-2

Rindge, NH - The Adelphi University baseball team took a 1-0 lead over top seeded Franklin Pierce in the third round of the NCAA Division II Northeast Regional but could not hold on, falling 7-2. The loss drops Adelphi to 35-16 overall. The Panthers will face the winner of the Bryant and Caldwell game.

The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Bill Melillo single to short, scoring Rob DeGennaro from third. Adelphi remained in control, 1-0 until the top of the fourth, when a Franklin Pierce triple to right center knotted the game at one.

In the fifth Franklin Pierce added three more runs, taking control 4-1, on a base clearing triple. The Ravens added a single run in each of the next three innings to collect the 7-2 victory.

Melillo knocked in both Adelphi runs and was 1-4 on the day. Mike Scudero was credited with the loss, allowing four runs in five innings of work and striking out six.

Adelphi returns to action at 6:00 pm on May 19 when they will play the winner of the Bryant and Caldwell game with a trip to the Northeast Regional championship on the line.
