Vargas Places Seventh at NCAA Super Regional

May 10, 2007

Wheeling, WV - Adelphi University junior Jantzen Vargas (78-80-76 - 234) shot a final round 76 to jump into a seventh place finish at the 2007 NCAA Division II Men's Golf East/Northeast Super Regional, concluded on Wednesday, May 9. Vargas finished nine shots behind tournament champion Dan McCarthy (77-75-73 - 225) of LeMoyne and seven strokes behind runner-up Matt Freedman (77-79-71 - 227) of Bentley.

LeMoyne (323-316-310 - 949) came from four shots behind heading into the final day to overtake second-place finishers Bryant (319-316-316 - 951) and Pace (322-316-313 - 951), claiming the NCAA Division II Men's Northeast Region Golf Championship at the Speidel Golf Club in Wheeling, West Virginia.

Vargas began his round on the back nine, where he had trouble on the 12th for the third straight, making a bogey, and playing the 391-yard par-4 in six-over par for his three rounds. A twelve-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole allowed Vargas to finish his opening nine holes with a score of 36 but a six-hole stretch played in four-over par during his final nine holes prevented any opportunity for a low number.

"Jantzen had 72 or 73 in sight today," said head coach Scott Allen, "but mental lapses cost him again. As he matures, he will learn how to finish a round and take his game to a higher level. That said, his effort and accomplishment this week and this year are something for himself and the university to be extremely proud of."

Vargas won two tournament titles this year and garnered seven top-ten finishes and twelve top-20 showings in 17 events. He closed his season with a run of seven consecutive top-15 finishes. Vargas also won the Long Island Intercollegiate on April 6 and the East Coast Conference (ECC) championship on April 10 and was named Player of the Year in the ECC for 2006-07. He is currently ranked #9 among individuals in the Northeast District rankings by Golfstat, the NCAA score-keeping service.
