Baseball Rallies Past New Haven, 8-7

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi baseball team trailed 7-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning when they rallied to score four runs and slip past New Haven, 8-7. The win raises Adelphi's overall record to 27-12 and 18-4 in the East Coast Conference (ECC), while New Haven falls to 26-15 and 14-9 in conference play.

The Panthers struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a Bobby Calca ground out that scored Chris Viscuso. New Haven answered back in the top of the third, scoring three runs on a fielding error, a Michael Moras single and a fielder's choice. The Panthers cut the Charger lead to one run, 3-2, on a Rob DeGennaro single to center that scored Rob Paccione in the bottom of the third.

New Haven added a run in the top of the fourth to push their edge to 4-2, but Adelphi tied the contest at four in the bottom of the fifth on a Mike Colonna single to right and a Mike Testani sacrifice fly. However, the Chargers responded with three runs in the next two innings to take a commanding 7-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

After a scoreless inning, the Panthers came up in the bottom of the eighth and immediately made some noise. Testani led off with a triple to center, followed by a Ryan Boelsen double that scored Testani. After Bill Melillo struck out, Viscuso singled, scoring Boelsen and cutting the margin to 7-6. Calca stroked a triple to right, knotting the game at seven, while Chris Weidlein hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Calca and putting Adelphi ahead 8-7.

Weidlein remained on the mound for the ninth inning, shutting down the Chargers in order to secure the win.

The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, May 1 when they play host to Dowling College at 3:00 pm in Garden City, N.Y.
