Baseball Sweeps Bridgeport

Game One| Game Two

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi baseball team used its bats to defeat East Coast Conference opponent, the University of Bridgeport 13-0 in the first game of a double header and relied on pitching in the second game to win 5-1. The wins improve the Panthers record to 24-9 and 15-2 in the ECC. The losses drop the Purple Knights to 14-8 and 11-5 in conference play.

Game One
Ryan Boelsen led the offense for the Panthers, going 4-5 including two doubles, driving in three runs, scoring two and had one stolen base. Robert Calca also swung the bat well, going 3-5, with one RBI and adding two runs.

Bobby Lanigan pitched nine innings of shutout baseball to pick up the win, allowing just three hits and three walks, while striking out nine.

Adelphi started its scoring in the second inning, when Chris Weidlein singled to center, driving in Calca and Boelsen. The next inning, the Panthers would score four more, two off a Bill Melillo homerun and two on a double by Ralph Tropiano. The Panthers would score seven more over the last three innings to close out the game.

Game Two
The Panthers pitching kept up its command on Bridgeport, allowing one run in the first and blanking them the rest of the way. Michael Myers went seven innings, allowing three hits and one run, while striking out five in the win.

Bridgeport jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the top of the first, off a Gary Vera double scoring Seth Desautel.

Adelphi would respond immediately, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first, taking a 2-1 lead. Bobby Calca scored after stealing third base, then advancing home on a throwing error. Mike Testani would then score off a Boelsen single to put Adelphi ahead. The Panthers would not look back, driving in two runs in the third and adding one more in the fourth.

Adelphi travels to Bridgeport, CT to finish the season series with the Purple Knights, Sunday April 22.
