Senior Lauren Lopez led all scorers with four goals, all in the first half, as the Adelphi University women's lacrosse team topped Merrimack College, 15-9, this afternoon at Stiles Field. The Panthers improve to 9-2 while the Warriors drop to 8-3.
Senior Diana Lopez tallied the first of her two goals at 29:35 on an assist from sophomore Rachel Ray to put Adelphi up early. Senior Tara Grodotzke made it 2-0 in the fourth minute. The Warriors answered back, tying the score, 2-2, at 15:30. Ray and D. Lopez combined for the next two goals to put the Panthers up for good. L. Lopez accounted for four of the Panthers five remaining goals in the first half to give Adelphi a 9-4 lead.
The Panthers opened the second half on a 7-1 run, with freshman Allison Tumulty picking up two of her three goals in the rally. Junior Megan Metelenis made it 15-5 on a free position shot with 18:03 remaining. This would prove to be the last goal for Adelphi as Merrimack scored four in the final 9:28 of play.
Both teams were evenly matched on paper, with each accounting for 13 draw controls. Merrimack held a slight 32-30 shot advantage while Adelphi led in ground balls 19-17. Turnovers plagued both sides as the teams combined for 49 in the contest.
The Panthers defense was key as goalkeepers Allyson Murphy and Caitlin Fitzpatrick combined for 18 saves. They held the Warriors to just 2-of-10 in free position shots, with five of Fitzpatrick's nine saves on those attempts.
Adelphi returns to action on Sunday, April 22, hosting Philadelphia University in a mid-season addition. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 noon.
