Women's Lacrosse Upended By Stonehill In Overtime Battle

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's lacrosse team fell to #4 Stonehill College, 12-11, in a triple overtime battle. The Skyhawks (11-0) scored with 16 seconds remaining in sudden death to capture the win and remain undefeated. The Panthers fall to 8-2 on the season.

In an evenly matched first half, Adelphi's strong defensive effort kept Stonehill off balance for most of the first half. Solid play by senior goalkeeper Allyson Murphy's was key in silencing the Skyhawks in the opening minutes. The Panthers got on board in the 10th minute as senior Lauren Lopez scored the first of her three goals, unassisted. The Skyhawks evened the score at 17:13 before senior Diana Lopez put the Panthers ahead, 2-1, at 15:08. Sophomore Rachel Ray made it 3-1 on a free position shot in the 18th minute. Stonehill found the back of the net for the second time, but this didn't stop Adelphi's rally. Seniors Meghan Blume and Tara Grodotzke tallied the next two goals to give Adelphi a 5-2 cushion at intermission.

D. Lopez made it 6-2 on a dish from sister, Lauren in the 32nd minute as the Panthers realized their largest lead. Kristin Darrell scored three of the next six unanswered goals by the Skyhawks to take the lead, 8-6, with 7:49 remaining in regulation. Blume knotted the score, 8-8, at 4:31 on an assist from D. Lopez, but Stonehill pushed its lead back to two, 10-8, with 2:31 to go. With just under two minutes to go, L. Lopez scored on an assist from Ray. Blume scored her third goal on a pass from L. Lopez to tie it at 10-10 at 58:11.

In the first overtime the Skyhawks moved ahead as Mary Maloney scored at 61:53. Freshman Allison Tumulty kept the Panthers in the game with four seconds left on an assist from Grodotzke.

Tied at 11, the second overtime period passed with no change, setting up the sudden death third overtime.

Adelphi won the draw and had its shot on goal blocked by Stonehill's Amanda McGeachey. The Skyhawks were fouled with 16 seconds remaining to set up the free position shot by Darrell for the win.

Murphy had 10 saves for Adelphi while McGeachey made five stops.

Despite holding a 20-7 draw control advantage, the Panthers were marred by turnovers, committing 18. Stonehill held a 31-23 shot advantage and grabbed 22 ground balls compared with 13 for Adelphi.

The Panthers return to action this Friday, April 20, when they host Merrimack College at 4:00 p.m.
