Junior Megan Metelenis scored with four seconds left to give defending NCAA Division II National Champion Adelphi a 12-11 victory over Gannon Saturday night in women's lacrosse action. The battle of nationally-ranked teams took place at Mercyhurst College due to GLIAC baseball and softball games at Gannon University Field.
Sophomore Rachel Ray gave Adelphi an early lead although Gannon led for the majority of the match. The Lady Knights answered with three consecutive goals before Ray scored again, 3-2. Again Gannon answered before senior Lauren Lopez brought Adelphi to within one, 4-3, with 10:46 remaining. Krista Schunk tallied her third goal of the half before freshman Danielle Kafarski found the back of the net in the 28th minute. However Gannon had the last word, taking a 6-4 advantage into intermission.
Ray hit back-to-back goals to knot the score, 6-6, in the opening minutes of the second half. Gannon still led 9-7 when Adelphi made its run. Freshman Holly Burke's goal spurred a 4-0 Panther run, capped by a goal from senior Diana Lopez to lead, 11-9, with 3:51 to play. The defending champs held the Lady Knights scoreless for 12 minutes and 51 seconds until Schunk scored her fourth goal at 1:52 and her fifth with 37 seconds left to tie the match at 11.
Adelphi won the ensuing draw and Metelenis scored the winning goal with four ticks on the clock.
Adelphi, ranked third in NCAA Division II, improved to 5-1. Gannon, ranked sixth in NCAA Division II, dropped to 7-2 with its second consecutive one-goal loss.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow, taking on Mercyhurst College at 11:00 a.m.
