Baseball Splits With St. Thomas Aquinas

Game One/Game Two

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University baseball team played host to East Coast Conference opponent St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday, March 31. The Panthers out hit the Spartans, 11-9, but could not overcome a four run second, falling 7-6 in game one. Adelphi exploded for eight runs in the fifth inning of game two to pick up a 9-4 victory.

The split raises Adelphi's overall record to 12-7 and brings their conference mark to 5-1, while St. Thomas Aquinas falls to 4-13 overall and 1-5 in the ECC.

Mike Testani and Ryan Boelsen hit well for the Panthers, with Testani going 3-5 with three RBI and one run scored in the two games, while Boelsen was 3-7 with two runs scored and three RBI. Ralph Tropiano also swung the bat well (3-6), driving in four runs, on a double and a home run and scoring two more.

Game One
With the score tied at zero in the top of the second, the Spartans scored four runs on three hits, including two on a single to right field. Adelphi responded with one run in the bottom of the inning on a Tropiano ground out that scored Bobby Calca. The Panthers and Spartans traded two run innings in the sixth, but Adelphi knotted the score at six in the bottom of the seventh thanks in part to a Tropiano home run.

With the score still tied at six in the top of the ninth Mike Mongiello gave up what would be the game winning run to St. Thomas Aquinas on a single to left field.

Mongiello was credited with the loss, while Bobby Lanigan pitched 5.2 innings, striking out four and allowing six runs, three earned. Andrew Nash picked up the win with two innings of two hit, no run relief.

Game Two
The second game started out as a pitchers duel, with neither team able to get on the board through four innings. The Spartans mustered a single run in the top of the fifth, but Adelphi erupted for eight in the bottom of the frame to take an 8-1 advantage on their way to a 9-4 victory.

Michael Myers threw seven innings of six hit, four run (three earned) baseball, striking out eight to collect the win. Chris Skrypack was credited with the loss, after pitching 4.1 innings and giving up six runs on seven hits.

The Panthers return to action on Sunday, April 1 when they travel to Sparkill, New York to finish out a three game set with St. Thomas Aquinas.
