Sophomore Mike Colonna batted 6 for 8 with seven runs and three RBI as Adelphi swept UMass Lowell, 13-9 and 20-18, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference baseball doubleheader at the Petersburg Sports Complex. With the losses, the River Hawks opened the year 0-2 while Adelphi opened 2-0. The two teams meet again Sunday for another doubleheader starting at 10:00.
In the first game Adelphi held a 7-2 lead through five innings thanks to five innings of two run baseball from sophomore Bobby Lanigan. However, UML scored six runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 9-7 lead, but surrendered five runs in the bottom of the inning en route to a 13-9 loss.
Junior Anthony Santos led the River Hawks as he batted 2 for 5 with a two-run home run in the eighth inning while Tim Manton went 2 for 5 with two RBI and one run. Freshman Brendan Fullerton also hit 2 for 5 with one run and one RBI. Senior Pat Donovan took the loss as he came on in the eighth inning but surrendered five runs (four earned).
Sophomore P Mike Tobia earned the win and improved to 1-0. Colonna batted 3 for 4 with four runs and two RBI while sophomore Robert Paccione went 3 for 6 with one run and two RBI. Senior Robert Calca went 2 for 4 with three runs and one RBI while junior Mike Connors batted 3 for 5 with three runs and two RBI.
In the nightcap, UML led 12-4 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Panthers erupted for 22 hits and scored 16 runs over the final three innings to take a 20-12 lead into the top of the seventh.
The River Hawks compiled six runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Santos and RBIs from Fullerton, senior Patrick Wilson and senior Jerod Edmondson.
Wilson led UML, hitting 2 for 3 with five RBI and three runs, including a grand slam in the fourth inning. Manton went 2 for 3 with three runs and one RBI while Edmondson batted 1 for 3 with four RBI, including a two-run shot in the first inning. Senior P Brian Tanguy took the loss, surrendering eight earned runs in 1 and 1/3 innings.
Adelphi Freshman Teddy Rohrs earned the win for Adelphi as he allowed no hits, no runs and a walk, striking out two in the fifth inning.
Junior Ryan Boelsen led the Panthers as he batted 3 for 4 with five RBI, including a three-run shot in the first inning, while sophomore Bill Melillo went 2 for 4 with five RBI and two runs, including a solo shot in the fifth inning and a three-run home run in the sixth. Paccione batted 4 for 5 with three runs and one RBI while junior Rob DeGennaro went 3 for 4 with three RBI and three runs. Colonna hit 2 for 4 with three runs and two RBI.
