Box Score
Brookville, N.Y. -
C.W. Post women's lacrosse team used a game-opening seven-goal flurry in the first 9:29 of action to shut down defending national champion Adelphi University, 10-6, Thursday afternoon at Hickox Field.
C.W. Post got on the board early, as senior defender Lindsay Goldman (game-high-tying 3 caused turnovers) controlled the opening draw. Just 27 seconds into the game, Fabian found sophomore Katie Hogan (two ct) alone in front of the net to put the Pioneers on top for good.
Junior midfielder Mallory Poole completed her game-leading hat trick 5:50 into the game, with two of her goals coming off passes from senior Shannon Fabian. Fabian netted her first tally of the day with 21:08 left in the first half, and when sophomore Jaclyn Napoli (2 g, 1 a, 3 ct) fired home her second goal of the day on a free-position shot with 20:31 left, the Pioneers found themselves in front by a 7-0 score.
Adelphi got on the scoreboard with 10:34 left in the half, when Rachel Ray scored her lone goal of the game on an unassisted effort to pull the Panthers within a 7-1 score - a score that lasted until halftime.
The second half started with a milestone goal for the Pioneers, as senior Lauren LoMonaco (three draw controls) ripped the rope 2:32 into the frame off a Napoli feed, giving LoMonaco her 100th point in a C.W. Post uniform and giving her team an 8-1 lead.
After Fabian put the hosts up 9-1 with 22:24 remaining, Adelphi scored three goals within a 3:47 span to pull within a 9-4 score with 13:59 to go. Tara Grodotzke (game-high five draw controls) scored her only goal of the match with 17:46 left, before Nicole Lein fired home a free-position shot for her first goal of the season with 15:27 to go.
The Panthers' Lauren Lopez (game-high-tying 3 ct, game-high-tying 5 gb) scored her 16th goal of the season with 13:59 left, before Hogan added her second goal of the contest with 8:29 remaining to push the C.W. Post lead back to six goals (10-4). Adelphi scored two goals in a 33-second span to pull within 10-6; the Panthers received an own goal off a deflected pass with 4:15 left, before Lopez scored on a free-position tally with 3:42 to go. From there, neither team got a shot off until there was 14 seconds left, when Grodotzke shot wide of the cage.
Senior Allyson Murphy made nine stops for Adelphi, while junior goalkeeper Lauren Scipione had 12 saves.
C.W. Post held a 26-21 edge in shots, but gained a big advantage in the clearing game; the Pioneers were successful on all but five of their 23 attempts, and held Adelphi to a 15-for-24 success rate.
The Pioneers (6-0, 3-0 ECC) have now won six of the teams' nine meetings, as they avenged a 9-8 loss in the 2006 NCAA Division II Championships semifinals to the Panthers (4-1, 1-1 ECC), May 13, 2006. The six goals by Adelphi marks the least amount of goals scored by either team in the series; the previous low came during a 13-7, C.W. Post victory in Brookville in the teams' first-ever meeting, Mar. 28, 2001.
Adelphi returns to action this weekend as they travel to Erie, Pa. for a pair of non-conference games. They will take on Gannon College on Saturday, March 31 at 7:00 PM, followed by a Sunday morning match-up with Mercyhurst College.
