Men's Lacrosse Falls To St. Andrew's, 16-12

Laurinburg, NC - The Adelphi men's lacrosse team trailed host, St. Andrew's, 9-8 at the half and pulled even at 9-9 after the intermission, but could not get over the hump, falling 16-12. The loss drops Adelphi to 2-3 on the season, while St. Andrew's improves to 7-3.

Drew Howell (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) scored two early extra-man opportunity goals to give St. Andrews a quick 2-0 lead before Adelphi got on the board. The Knights surged out to a 6-1 lead with the next four scores but the Panthers fought back with the final thee goals of the opening quarter to cut the Knight lead to 6-4 after 15 minutes.

Adelphi kept the momentum to start the second quarter, scoring three of the first four goals. Freshman Ian Kuchta's (Norwalk, Conn.) first goal of the game capped the rally and tied the game at 7-7.

The Knights regained the lead for the rest of the half just 27 seconds later as senior Dan Hartzell (Lacombe, Alberta, Canada) found the back of the Panther goal. Senior Zach Mryncza (Baltimore, Md.) added another tally for St. Andrews but Kuchta scored with just 30 seconds left in the half, cutting the Knight lead to 9-8, at halftime.

Kuchta struck again just seven seconds out of the intermission to tie the contest for the second and final time at 9-9. However, an Adelphi was called for an illegal stick on the ensuing face-off and St. Andrew's was able to take advantage, reeling off three goals in the next 60 seconds to push out to a 12-9 lead. The Knights out scored Adelphi, 5-2, in the third and entered the fourth quarter with a 14-10 edge.

Each team scored two goals in the fourth as Adelphi fell, 16-12. The difference proved to be extra man opportunities as St. Andrew's converted five of eight chances, while Adelphi scored on three of six opportunities.

Adelphi held a slim 44-36 shot advantage, while St. Andrews won 18-of-31 face-offs.

Kuchta led the Panthers attack with four goals. Senior Michael Gongas (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and junior Marc Burton (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada) posted two goals apiece.

Adelphi returns to action on March 28, when they travel to Orangeburg, New York for a 4:00 pm meeting with Dominican.
