Softball Finishes 6-4 at Rebel Games

Orlando, FL - The Adelphi Softball team finished its trip to Orlando, Florida with a 6-4 record in the Rebel Games. The Panthers got into a groove, winning six straight games, but were unable to finish the tournament on this win streak.

Day One
The Panthers took on the Cougars of St. Xavier University in the first game of the day, suffering a 3-2 loss. The Cougars jumped out to an early lead when Rebekah Ruetigger racked up two RBI's in the second inning to put St. Xavier up two. Jory Bodi then added what would be the game-winning RBI in the third. The Panthers fought tough to get back into it, putting up one run in the fourth and fifth innings, but it was not enough to make the come back. Bodi earned the win in the game, while Julie Schaper suffered the loss.

Adelphi picked up its first win of the tournament against Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the second game of the day by a score of 4-3. IUP took a 1-0 lead over Adelphi on doubles by Sara Tripoli and Erin Holloway in the second. The Panthers tied the score in the top of the third and then Jessica Vogt hit a three run homerun to give the Panthers a 4-1 lead in the fifth. Junior, Samantha Tilton picked up her first win of the season, while Erin Holloway suffered the loss.

Day Two
Adelphi took on the Vulcans of California University in the first game of the day picking up its second win 3-2. Vogt hit her second homerun of the tournament, this time a two-run blast in the bottom of the fourth inning, to put the Panthers up 2-0. The Vulcans then tied the game in the top of the sixth off a two-run single by Amanda Collins. Adelphi responded in the bottom of the inning when Schaper hit a single to bring home Katie Brophy for the win. Senior Sheila Feldman pitched five and two-third innings, allowing two runs and striking out three. Schaper recorded the win after replacing Feldman.

In the second game, Schaper pitched five shutout innings for Adelphi, picking up nine strikeouts to earn her second win of the day. Sophomore, Samantha Johnston tallied four RBI while going three for five on the day. Sophomore, Christina O'Hara added three RBI and scored two off two hits.

Day Three
The Panthers continued their winning ways picking up another two wins on the third day of the Rebel Games. Adelphi played the Tiffin University Dragons in the first game, pulling away with a 1-0 victory. This game turned out to be a pitchers duel between Adelphi's Samantha Tilton and Tiffin's April Nietrzeba. Tilton was able to outlast Nietrzeba to pick up her second win of the tournament. Schaper collected the game-winning RBI in the fourth inning off a single that scored Katie Brophy.

Adelphi improved their record to 5-1 after picking up a 6-0 win over ECC opponent Queens College. The score was knotted at zero going into the fourth inning when Adelphi put up its first run of the game. The Panthers then put the game away in the seventh inning scoring five runs. Schaper tallied her third win of the tournament, pitching seven shutout innings, striking out 11 and allowing three hits.

Day Four
Sophomore, Kristin Brennan went two for three with three RBI to give the Panthers its sixth win of the Rebel Games over the Dragons of Minnesota State University-Moorhead, 4-1. The Dragons took the early lead scoring one in the second inning. Adelphi then used a three run third to put the game away. The Panthers added an insurance run in the fifth to put the game out of reach. Freshman, Christine Robinson picked up her first win as a Panther going seven innings, allowing one run off six hits and striking out two.

The Panthers jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the second inning, but was unable to hold on as the Bulldogs of Minnesota State Duluth used a six run third to go ahead 7-2. Adelphi added one more in the sixth, but they were unable to come back from the deficit, falling 7-3. Jessica Vogt went 3-3 in the game, while Samantha Johnston went 2-4 and added an RBI.

Day Five
The Panthers used a two-run seventh to begin a comeback, but fell short as Merrimack College Warriors won, 5-4. Adelphi was up, 2-0, going into the third inning, but Merrimack used a four run third to go ahead 4-2. The score remained locked through the seventh inning, when the Warriors added what would prove to be the game-winning run. Jessica Vogt went 2-4 and added three RBI. Schaper suffered her second loss of the tournament after going four innings, giving up four runs on four hits, striking out six.

Adelphi lost its fourth and final game of the Rebel Games, falling to the Shippensburg Lady Raiders, 9-1. The Panthers fell behind, 2-0, after the third inning, but scored one in the fifth to cut the lead to one. However, Shippensburg used a seven run sixth to put the game away. Tilton suffered her first loss of the season, going six innings, giving up nine runs and striking out four.

The Panthers begin their East Coast Conference schedule against Dowling, March 22 at 3:00 pm on Janet L. Ficke Field.
