Sophomore Bill Melillo was 6-for-7 with six RBI to lead Adelphi University to a doubleheader sweep of Northwood University (Fla.) in a collegiate baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Silvester Field. The Panthers won game one, 12-1, in six innings before taking game two by a 1-0 margin. The Panthers improve to 7-5 with the sweep while the Seahawks fall to 15-14.
Melillo highlighted a potent Adelphi offense that pounded out 23 hits in the twin bill.
Junior Ryan Boelson was 4-for-7 with a solo home run while junior Mike Testani was 3-for-6 with two RBI and senior Robert Calca was 3-for-5 with a run scored.
Junior Mike Schaetzle was 2-for-4 to lead a Northwood attack that managed just eight hits on the afternoon. Junior Eric Woodward had the Seahawks lone RBI in the doubleheader
Adelphi jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game one, using run-scoring singles from Testani and Melillo to build the early cushion.
The Panthers added two runs in the bottom of the second on a two-run double off the left field fence by sophomore Mike Colonna to make it 4-0 before plating two runs in the top of the third on a solo home run by Boelson and a sacrifice fly by senior Ralph Tropiano to make it 6-0.
Adelphi made it 8-0 in the fourth inning on singles by Testani and Melillo before Melillo put the Panthers ahead 12-0 in the top of the sixth on a grand slam to center field. The Seahawks would tally a run in the bottom of the sixth on a fielder's choice to make it 12-1, but the game was called after six innings due to the 10-run rule.
Senior Mike Myers picked up the win for the Panthers in the opener to improve to 1-0. In six innings, Myers allowed one run on four hits and four walks. He struck out five.
Senior Herbert Cruz was credited with the loss, moving his record to 3-2. In 3.1 innings, Cruz allowed eight runs (six earned) on 13 hits. He struck out three.
Game two was a pitchers duel that saw the Panthers score the only run of the game in the top of the seventh as Calca reached base on a single through the right side and advanced to third on a throwing error by junior James Maley during a stolen base attempt. Calca scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Tropiano.
Junior Mike McLasky was credited with the win in the nightcap to move to 1-0. In two innings in relief of starter Mike Scudero, McLasky faced just one batter over the limit as he allowed one hit. He also struck out one.
Junior Jonathon Velasquez was the hard-luck loser in game two, taking the loss to fall to 1-3. In seven innings, Velasquez surrendered the one unearend run on six hits and three walks. He also struck out three.
Adelphi returns to action on March 20 when they play host to Dominican College at 3:30 pm in Garden City, New York.
