The Adelphi baseball team continued their southern swing with a 9-8 win over Bloomfield in Palm Beach, Florida on Sunday, March 11. The Panthers were tied 8-8 going into the ninth inning, but Bill Melillo remained patient at the plate drawing a walk and bringing home the game-winning run.
Mike Myers pitched six innings of one run baseball. Chris Weidlein was credited with the win after pitching in relief.
After trailing 1-0 in the third, Melillo helped get the Panthers on the board with a two RBI hit, putting the Panthers ahead 2-1. Bloomfield would then score two to go ahead 3-2 in the top of the seventh. Adelphi would score five runs to go ahead 7-3 in the bottom of the seventh. Joe Maranino and Ralph Tropiano would account for four of these runs, each scoring two off singles.
Bloomfield would respond with in the top of the eighth with a five-run inning to take back the lead 8-7 going into the bottom of the inning. The Panthers scored one to tie the score.
Bloomfield was held scoreless in the top of the ninth, giving Adelphi a chance to pick up the win. Robert Paccione led off with a hit. Mike Testani was intentionally walked two batters later putting runners on first and second. Ryan Boelsen then hit a line drive that the pitcher was unable to handle, loading the bases for Melillo.
Adelphi returns to action on March 12 at 7:00 pm when they take on Palm Beach Atlantic in West Palm Beach, Florida.
