The Adelphi men's basketball team outscored host Bridgeport, 39-38 in the second half, but could not overcome a 25-21 halftime deficit, falling 63-60. The loss drops Adelphi to 14-11 overall and 11-7 in East Coast Conference play, while Bridgeport improves to 17-7 overall and 12-6 in conference action.
Adelphi moved out to a 5-2 lead with 18:22 to play, thanks to back-to-back buckets from Mike Mosby (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and Donnell Cummings (South Ozone Park, N.Y.). However Bridgeport responded with an 11-4 run over the next 12 minutes to take control, 13-9 with 6:04 remaining in the half.
The Purple Knights would remain in control the rest of the first half, taking a 25-21 edge at intermission.
The Panthers cut the lead to one point on several occasions during the first 10 minutes of second half action before finally breaking through and taking a 41-38 lead on made free throws from Kimani Blaize (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Samuel Jenkins (Brooklyn, N.Y.).
Over the next several minutes the lead changed hands five times, with Adelphi taking their final lead of the game on two Jenkins' free throws with 2:10 remaining. Bridgeport answered back with a 5-0 run, taking a 57-54 lead that would turn into a 63-60 win.
Jeremy Benjamin led the way for Bridgeport with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Ernest Daney chipped in 13 points and 18 rebounds.
Blaize was the high man for Adelphi with 15 points, Jenkins and Cummings added 12 points each.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, February 21 when they travel to Brookville, New York for a 7:30 pm meeting with C.W. Post.
