Box Score
West Haven, CT -
Graduate student Anthony Noble registered 16 of his game-high 20 points in the second half to guide the Adelphi University men's basketball team to a 74-60 win over New Haven. The Panthers improve to 12-10 on the season and 9-6 in the conference, while the Chargers fall to 5-17 and 4-12.
Noble was 10-for-10 from the free throw line overall, hitting eight in the second half as Adelphi sealed the victory from the charity stripe. The Panthers were 28 for 33 from the free throw line overall, and after New Haven began to foul with 2:33 remaining in the game, AU made 16 of their final 19 free throws to end the affair.
Senior Mike Mosby scored 16 points for Adelphi including six straight on three possessions late in the second half to put his team on top for good.
Freshman Cassius Chaney had 17 points to lead UNH, while junior Carl Campbell (photo) had 13 points, eight rebounds, and hit a key 3-pointer late in the second half.
Campbell buried the shot from the right side with 8:20 remaining to get the Chargers within six, at 46-40. After a steal by Chaney, he made a jumper and was fouled, completing the three-point play to bring UNH as close as they would get.
Senior Ryan Killion had a three-point attempt from the corner that would have tied the game, but it missed long and Mosby collected the rebound. He was fouled, and made one of two free throws to put his team up 47-43.
After a missed three-pointer by UNH, the Panthers went inside to Mosby for a layup that made the score 49-43. Chaney would hit a jumper at the other end to bring UNH within four, but Mosby came right back with a layup plus one free throw to make it seven - 52 to 45.
Chaney had a layup to bring UNH within five, 52-47, but Adelphi scored eight straight points to effectively end the game. Senior Kimani Blaize, who finished with 11 points, hit two 3-pointers in that stretch and Noble closed it out with the first of six straight free throws for him in the final 2:33 as UNH began to foul to get the ball back.
Both teams overcame a brutal first half that saw both teams go without a field goal for stretches of over six minutes. Adelphi opened the game on a 7-0 run after UNH failed to score for the opening 5:39, and the Chargers didn't hit their first field goal until a layup by J.C. Kouame 8:32 into the game.
But Adelphi led just 10-4 at that point, and UNH reeled off 13 straight points to take a 17-10 lead after Adelphi went without any score at all for the next 6:06. Noble hit a layup at the buzzer, sending the teams into the lockerroom tied at 22.
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, February 13, hosting Queens College at Woodruff Hall at 7:30 p.m.
