Adelphi Women Fall Short Against New Haven, 92-71

West Haven, CT - The Adelphi University women's basketball team suffered a tough 92-71 conference loss against the University of New Haven this afternoon at Charger Gymnasium. This snapped a four-game win streak for the Panthers who drop to 11-11 overall and 10-5 in the ECC. The Chargers improve to 18-5 and 13-3 in the ECC.

Sophomore Serita Lee led the Panthers with 13 points and six rebounds. Senior Betty Mendieta added 12 points and three assists, while junior Gianna Smith accounted for 10 points.

Despite shooting 57.1 percent from the field in the first half, Adelphi still trailed by 12 points, 47-35, at intermission. The Chargers scored the first two baskets of the contest before the Panthers rallied to knot the game, 8-8, on a layup by junior Mary Lepore at 15:59. Adelphi would not take the lead, trailing by as much as 14 points, 39-25, with 3:34 remaining. The Chargers went to the line 12 times in the first stanza, connecting on eight, compared to just two-of-four for the Panthers.

Adelphi was held to just two points in the first 4:39 of the second half and without a consistent rally were unable to close the gap. UNH, which connected on 17-of-28 attempts, led by as much as 26 points late in the game on a layup by senior Ashley Hilton with 2:35 left in regulation.

New Haven outrebounded Adelphi, 40-27, and converted 28 points on turnovers. They also dished out 24 assists compared with just 10 for the Panthers.

Hilton led all scorers with an impressive 34 point performance, grabbing 11 boards in the process. Senior Tristan Jackson was the only other Charger in double figures with 18 points and five rebounds.

Adelphi returns to Woodruff Hall on Tuesday, February 13, hosting Queens College at 5:30 p.m.
