Men's Basketball Climbs Past Concordia, 71-59

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi men's basketball team used a 15-3 run late in the first half to overcome a slow start and rally to a 71-59 win over visiting Concordia College in East Coast Conference (ECC) action on February 1. With the win Adelphi improves to 10-9 overall and 7-5 in the ECC, while Concordia falls to 6-12 overall and 5-7 in the conference.

The early stages of the first half was a defensive struggle as Concordia crawled out to a 5-0 lead with 14:40. The Clippers pushed out to a 20-7 lead with 8:37 remaining in the first half. Adelphi responded with a 15-3 run that lasted 4:26, taking a two-point lead, 25-23, on the back of a Samuel Jenkins (Brooklyn, N.Y.) three-point play.

Adelphi and Concordia played even the rest of the half, as the Panthers entered the half with a 35-33 edge.

The Panthers and Concordia opened the second half by trading baskets, until the Clippers cut the Adelphi lead to one, 39-38, thanks to two Richard Fields foul shots with 16:53 left in the half. A Sky Khaleel (Queens, N.Y.) lay-up sparked a 25-2 run that put the game out of reach and gave Adelphi an insurmountable 64-40 lead with 8:14 left in the game.

Richard Fields led the Clippers with 22 points, while Kenny Gaskins chipped in 12 points, six assists and four steals.

The Panthers put four players in double figures led by Kimani Blaize (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who scored 16 points, grabbed five misses and handed out four assists. Alvin Vivican (Brentwood, N.Y.) added a career-high 13 points and pulled down five rebounds while Samuel Jenkins contributed 12 points. Donnell Cummings (South Ozone Park, N.Y.) also reached double digits, scoring 10 points, pulling down six rebounds and picking up four assists.

Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, February 6 when they host St. Thomas Aquinas at 5:30 pm in Woodruff Hall.
