Garden City, N.Y. -
The Adelphi University women's basketball team trailed, 41-34, at the half and were never able to recover, falling to Caldwell College, 86-73, in non-conference action this afternoon at Woodruff Hall. The loss snaps a five-game win streak for the Panthers as they fall to 5-4. The Cougars improve to 6-1.
Senior Mary Lepore led all scorers with 23 points, 15 in the first half. The Panthers shot 35.7 percent (10-28) from the field, compared with 38.5 percent (15-39) for the Cougars. Junior Serita Lee accounted for 10 of her 12 boards in the first half to help Adelphi to a 28-20 rebound advantage. However the Panthers still trailed by seven points at the end of the half, 41-34.
A opening bucket by Lepore closed the gap to five points, but this would be the closest the Panthers would get. The Cougars responded on a 20-7 tear to lead by 18 points, 59-41, with 12:24 to go. Senior Gianna Smith connected on two of her 19 points at 8:22, 65-57, but Caldwell outscored Adelphi 21-16 in the remaining minutes to hold on for the win.
Four of Caldwell's starters posted double digits led by Khaliga Davis with 20 points. Mackenzie Lynch and Dana Leary each had 13 points with Lynch pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds. Janay Perkins had 10 points.
The Panthers return to action next Saturday, December 22, as they travel to Albany, New York to take on The College of St. Rose at 2:00 p.m.
