Men's Basketball Climbs Past Caldwell, 56-52

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi men's basketball team played host to Caldwell College on Saturday, December 15 in Woodruff Hall. The Panthers held Caldwell to 29 percent shooting in the first half and 37 percent shooting for the game to pick up a 56-52 win. With the win Adelphi improves to 5-3 overall, while Caldwell falls to 2-4.

The Cougars opened the game on a 10-4 run that spanned the first six minutes of action. Adelphi closed to within one point on a Pat Luptowski three-pointer with 8:13 left in the first, before Caldwell used a 5-0 spurt to push the edge back to six, 17-11 with 6:15 on the clock.

The Panthers responded by outscoring the Cougars 13-3 over the next six minutes to take a four point lead, 24-20, with 31 seconds left in the half and entered the break with a 24-22 lead.

Caldwell came out of the half hot, using an 11-2 run to build a seven point lead, 33-26 with 13:57 left in the game. However, the Panthers clawed back, outscoring the Cougars 27-8 over the next 11 minutes to take their largest lead of the game, 53-41 with 46 ticks left on the clock.

The Cougars would not go quietly as they rattled off seven points over the next 36 seconds to pull within five on a Manny Perez three-point play. Two Richard Byrd foul shots pushed the lead back to seven, but a made Michael Wise free throw and a B.J. Suchy three-pointer with just second left pulled Caldwell to within three points. But that was as close as the Cougars would get as Oppong Agyemang netted a free throw with four seconds left to seal the 56-52 win.

Suchy led the Cougars with 20 points and three rebounds, while Perez also found double figures, scoring 11 points. Sam Cricelli pulled down 10 misses in the loss.

Luptowski was the high man for Adelphi with 15 points, while Sky Khaleel chipped in 11 points and six rebounds and Byrd netted 11 points.

The Panthers return to action on Friday, December 21 when they take on Bryant at 7:00 pm in Woodruff Hall.
