The Adelphi University men's basketball team played host to Molloy College on Wednesday, November 28 in an East Coast Conference match-up. The Panthers held Molloy to just 26 first half points, building a 31-26 halftime lead that turned into a 74-65 victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the ECC, while Molloy falls to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Adelphi took control early in the first half, opening the game with a 15-4 run that lasted just over six minutes and gave the Panthers an 11 point cushion with 13:54 left in the half. However, Molloy battled back, cutting the Panther lead to just three points on two occasions, but could get no closer in the first half as Adelphi entered the locker room with a 31-26 edge.
The Lions cut Adelphi's lead to three points, 31-28, just 32 seconds into the second half on a Vincent Falzone jumper. But, the Panthers responded with an 11-4 run that pushed their lead to double digits, 42-32 with 16:57 left in the game.
Molloy answered Adelphi's challenge, coming alive to out score the Panthers, 25-15 over the next nine and a half minutes, knotting the game at 57 with 7:31 to play. Adelphi battled back, taking a four point lead, 61-57, with 6:21 on the clock, but the Lions tied the game at 61 just over a minute later.
But, that was as close as Molloy would get as Alvin Vivican sunk a three-pointer, followed by two Richard Byrd free throws, giving Adelphi a 66-63 edge with 3:15 to play. Six straight free throws, two from Vivican and four from Mike McDuffie, in the last 33 seconds sealed the 74-65 win.
Falzone led all scorers and rebounders with 19 points and 14 rebounds, while Mark Pierre chipped in 10 points and six boards.
Vivican led the Panthers with 17 points, while McDuffie added eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Sky Khaleel also had a strong game, scoring nine points and grabbing six misses.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, December 1 when they travel to Old Westbury, New York to take on NYIT at 4:00 pm.
