Despite leading 36-33 at intermission and shooting 45 percent from the field in the second half, the Adelphi University women's basketball team fell to host Philadelphia University, 84-75, on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Rams improve to 2-1 while the Panthers drop to 0-3.
The difference came at the free throw line, with the Lady Rams making 43 trips to the charity stripe compared with just 14 for the Panthers.
Senior Mary Lepore (Manhasset, N.Y.) led Adelphi with 18 points along with seven boards. Junior Lisa Manetta (Glendale, N.Y.) tallied 17 points and four assists while senior Gianna Smith (Hempstead, N.Y.) chipped in 13 points to go with a team-high nine rebounds.
Ashley Webster led a balanced Philadelphia attack with 20 points, including 10-of-11 from the free throw line, and 14 rebounds. A total of five Lady Rams posted double digits, with Jessica Romano also adding 20 points. Sisters Amanda and Kate Brennan and Stephanie Agger added 14 points apiece.
Philadelphia forced 17 Adelphi turnovers while commiting just six. They also held a slight 47-42 rebound advantage. The Panthers shot 42.6 percent from the field compared with 37.1 for the Lady Rams, but in constrast they struggled from the free throw line, connecting on 8-of-14 (57.1 percent). Philadelphia hit 87 percent (28-33) of its shots down the stretch to outscore Adelphi, 51-39, in the second stanza.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, November 28, as they open their conference schedule at home, hosting Molloy College at 5:30 p.m.
