Men's Basketball Wins Season Opener Over Nyack, 68-63

Orangeburg, N.Y. - Adelphi University won their opening round game in the 2007 Dominican College Tip-Off Tournament held on Coach Baxter Court on Friday, November 16. Adelphi defeated Nyack College, 68-63 in the first game of the tournament after leading 35-31 at the half to open the season, 1-0, while Nyack falls to 0-1.

Adelphi held a 35-31 lead at the half behind a 14-point first half performance from Chris Diasparra (Mahopac, NY) that included two three-pointers. The Warriors came within a point late in the second half as senior Sheanan Martinez (Haverstraw, NY) hit a jumper to cut the Panther lead to 61-60, but Adelphi was able to pull out the 68-63 as Nyack was forced to foul and Adelphi went 7-8 from the line in the final minute for the victory.

The Warriors were led by senior John Van Dunk (Hillburn, NY) with 13 points. Valiant Jones (Los Angeles, CA) added eight points, while Martinez and Brian Roberts (Hartford, CT) each had seven points in the loss.

Diasparra led the Panthers with 23 points and three assists, while David Akinyooye (Elmont, NY) added 11 points and six rebounds in the win. Richard Byrd (Central Islip, NY) contributed 10 points and five rebounds.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, November 17 when they take on host Dominican College at 8:00 pm.
