Women's Basketball Drops Season Opener To Bryant, 68-63

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team fell to Bryant College, 68-63, in its season home opener tonight at Woodruff Hall. The Bulldogs improve to 1-0, while the Panther drop to 0-1.

Junior Lisa Manetta (Glendale, N.Y.) led the Panthers with 17 points, including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. Senior Mary Lepore (Manhasset, N.Y.) had 13 points, while senior Gianna Smith (Hempstead, N.Y.) added 10 points. Junior Serita Lee (Malverne, N.Y.) pulled down a team-high eight rebounds along with five points.

The game was close throughout with seven ties and 11 lead changes in the first half alone. Adelphi led by as much as six points after two made free throws by Smith with 4:56 left in the half. The Bulldogs rallied on a 10-0 run to move ahead, 30-26 at 3:11. The Panthers closed on a 7-2 run to hold a 33-32 advantage at intermission.

Adelphi came out strong in the second stanza, with Manetta accounting for eight of the team's first 11 points to push the lead to 46-38. Bryant responded with eight unanswered points to tie the game at 46 with 11:19 left on the clock. The Panthers maintained a slight lead until back to back three-pointers by sophomore Kelsey O'Keefe put the Bulldogs back in contention. Bryant took the lead for good at 4:33 as sophomore Adrianne Mayshar hit both free throws to make it 60-59.

O'Keefe led all players with a game-high 33 points along with eight boards. Mayshar was the only other Bulldog in double figures with 10 points.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, November 17, when they travel to North Andover, Massachusetts to take on Merrimack College. Tip off is at 1:00 p.m.
