New Hyde Park, N.Y. -
In an emotionally charged game, Adelphi Women's Soccer upset the #15 Chargers of the University of New Haven, 2-1. The loss drops the Chargers to 7-1 in the ECC, 11-5-2 overall, while the Panthers improve to 9-5 overall, 5-3 in the ECC.
The match saw its first goal at 39:18 when Elise Maniguet (Pine Bush, NY) broke through a tackle on the left side of the field and served a cross that found the head of Denise Auer (Holbrook, NY), putting the Panthers up 1-0. The match would go relatively untested until the 65th minute when Caitlin Morrison (Beacon, NY) had a near goal opportunity, ripping a shot that hit the right post.
The Chargers would counter six minutes later with a breakaway opportunity by Selina Moylan, that failed when the shot sailed over the crossbar. However, her next scoring opportunity would not. With three minutes remaining in regulation play, Moylan found herself in another breakaway opportunity. This time she connected, sliding the ball into the bottom left corner of the net, tying the match 1-1.
30 seconds later, the Panthers put themselves in a goal scoring opportunity when a direct kick was called in their favor at the top of the penalty box. Amanda Popoli (South Salem, NY) took the kick, and her shot at the top right corner of the net would make it past Caitlin Witucki to put the Panthers up 2-1. Adelphi was able to stop all further attacks by the Chargers to take the win.
Christine Conway (Rockville Centre, NY) made seven saves in her ninth win of the season, while Witucki made two saves in the loss.
The Panthers will continue their home stand, Wednesday, October 24, when they host the Knights of Queens College at Tully Park, New Hyde Park, New York
