The Adelphi men's basketball team traveled to Caldwell, New Jersey on January 30 to take on Caldwell College in non-conference action. The Panthers outscored the Cougars, 40-33 in the second half but it was not enough to overcome a 36-16 halftime deficit. With the 69-56, loss Adelphi falls to 9-9, while Caldwell improves to 12-8.
With the game knotted at 12 half way through the first half Caldwell ripped off 10 straight points to spark a 24-4 run that lasted the final nine minutes of the first half and gave the Cougars a 36-16 lead at the break.
The Caldwell lead grew to 24 after a lay-up by Adam Sabree made it 45-21 with 15:16 remaining in the game. However, the Panthers responded with an 11-2 spurt capped by a lay-up from Samuel Jenkins (Brooklyn, N.Y.). The run helped the Panthers cut the lead to 47-32 at the midway point of the second half.
But, the Cougars proceeded to make 7-of-8 from the line to push their lead back to 54-32 at the eight-minute mark. Jean Georges converted four free throws to make the score 62-38 with 4:19 left to play.
The Panthers heated up from three-point range late, hitting four threes in the final four minutes of the game, including three from Kimani Blaize (Brooklyn, N.Y.). But it was enough as Caldwell claimed a 69-56 win.
The difference in the game came at the free throw line, where Caldwell made 31 of 36 attempts, while Adelphi converted on 17 of 22 visits.
Georges led the way for Caldwell with 27 points, while Adam Sabree and Michael Wise chipped in 10 apiece.
Donnell Cummings (South Ozone Park, N.Y.) paced Adelphi with 17 points, while Jenkins added 13. Mike Mosby (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) scored eight and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
The Panthers return to action on Thursday, February 1 when they host East Coast Conference opponent Concordia College at 7:30 pm.
