The Adelphi University women's basketball team connected on just 5-of-24 attempts in the first half and were unable to close the gap, falling to C.W. Post, 61-50, on Tuesday night at Woodruff Hall. The Panthers fall to 7-9 overall and 6-3 in the ECC, while the Pioneers improve to 8-8 and 7-2 in the league.
Junior Gianna Smith led the Panthers with 16 points and five rebounds. Senior Betty Mendieta posted her first double-digit game of 2007, contributing 12 points, four assists and four steals.
Adelphi was 0-4 from the field in the opening minutes, while C.W. Post quickly set the tone by opening on a 7-0 run. The Panthers trailed by has much as 14 points, 27-13, at 3:48 remaining in the half. Four of Adelphi's five remaining points came from the free throw line as they closed the gap to nine, 28-19. The Panthers were 8-for-8 from the line in the first half, extending their streak to 24 straight free throws over the last two games.
The Pioneers fought hard to hold onto the lead in the second half, keeping the Panthers at least eight points out for most of the contest. Trailing by ten with 7:48 to go, the Panthers rallied on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to four, 44-40, at 5:37. However Post managed to keep Adelphi at bay, closing on a 17-10 run.
The Panthers were 8-for-9 from the charity stripe in the second half. It's streak came to an end at 32 straight as Menedieta went 2-for-3 after being fouled on a three-point attempt.
Adelphi struggled on the boards as C.W. Post outrebounded them 39-27. Whitney Murrer led a balanced Pioneer team with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Jennifer DiChiara had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Adelphi returns to action on Thursday, January 25, traveling to Rockville Centre to take on Molloy College at 5:00 p.m.
