Seniors Kimani Blaize and Samuel Jenkins combined for more than half of Adelphi's points in a 76-71 conference loss versus the University of Bridgeport at Woodruff Hall this afternoon. The Panthers fall to 7-7 overall and 5-5 in the ECC while the Purple Knights improve to 11-3 and 6-2 in the league.
Blaize and Jenkins each tallied 20 points, with Jenkins connecting on 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Senior Mike Mosby contributed 12 of his 17 points in the second half, while grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds. Senior Donnell Cummings pulled down 10 boards along with seven points.
After opening on an 8-0 run to the start the game, Bridgeport rallied on an 11-2 run to take the lead at 13:13. The game remained close, with Adelphi recatpruing the lead on a jumper by Jenkins, 22-20, at 6:57. The Panthers shot 38.1 percent from the field, compared with 34.5 percent from the Purple Knights, yet found themselves trailing, 31-28, at the half.
UB led by has much as seven points, 39-32 on a three-point bucket from Ernest Daney at 15:42 in the second half. The Panthers rallied on a 11-4 run to tie the score at 43-43 on a dunk by Mosby at 11:46. However Bridgeport pushed its lead back up to seven, 60-53, with 6:54 remaining. Adelphi closed to within one with 2:54 in regulation, but Bridgeport went 3-for-4 down the stretch to maintain the win.
Daney led a balanced Purple Knights' squad with a game-high 21 points and seven rebounds. Japhet McNeil had 14 points and seven rebounds.
The Panthers are back in action this Tuesday, January 23, hosting C.W. Post at 7:30 p.m.
