Graduate student Valentina Ionova went 6-for-9 for 16 points off the bench to lead the Adelphi University women's basketball team to a 63-50 conference win over host Queens College. The Panthers snap a four-game slump to improve to 5-8 and 4-2 in the ECC. The Knights drop to 2-11 and 0-6 in the league.
Ionova saw just 17 minutes in the contest, but it was enough to lead all scorers and the only player in double digits for the Panthers. Junior Mary Lepore had nine points and nine rebounds. Junior Gianna Smith also chipped in nine points along with eight boards.
Sophomore Serita Lee dominated the boards, grabbing 14 rebounds, eight offensive, to go along with six points. This helped Adelphi outrebound Queens, 55-41.
The Panthers held the Knights scoreless for the first 4:46 of the game (7-0) and without a field goal for the first 9:25 (16-5) en route to a 31-21 first half lead.
Queens upped its game in the second half, shooting an improved 43.3 percent, but were unable to close the gap.
The Knights were led by Jessica Sanchez with 11 points. Danielle Castelli had 10 points, eight from the charity stripe, and 10 rebounds.
Adelphi is back in action on Wednesday, January 17, as they travel to Dowling College. Tip-off is 5:00 p.m.
