Box Score
Garden City, N.Y. -
Senior guard Kimani Blaize (Brooklyn, N.Y.) converted two free throws with 24 seconds left in the game to tie the score at 59, but New Haven's Cassius Chaney hit a game winning 18 footer to hand the Panthers their sixth loss of the season. The defeat drops Adelphi to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the East Coast Conference, while New Haven improves to 2-8 overall and 1-4 in conference action.
New Haven held Adelphi scoreless for the first 2:18 to push out to a 6-0 lead, but a quick 6-0 Panther run, including five points from Mike Mosby (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) knotted the game at six with 16:13 left on the clock. But, New Haven responded with a 5-0 spurt to slip ahead 11-6 before the Panthers answered back with a 9-0 run to reclaim the lead at 15-11 with 9:46 to play.
From there Adelphi took their largest lead of the first half, 22-15, on an Anthony Noble (Uniondale, N.Y.) lay-up with 5:00 left on the clock. Over the next four minutes, the Chargers outscored Adelphi 7-1 to pull within a point, 23-22, with 38 seconds left in the first. However, a Donnell Cummings (South Ozone Park, N.Y.) three-pointer with just four ticks left in the half gave the Panthers a comfortable 26-22 edge going into halftime.
The Chargers opened the second half much like the first, holding Adelphi scoreless for the first 2:28 to take a one-point lead, 27-26, on the strength of a 5-0 run. Again Adelphi answered back to push out to a four point edge thanks to back-to-back three pointers from Samuel Jenkins (Brooklyn, N.Y.).
Adelphi continued to answer every New Haven attack, eventually taking their largest lead of the second half, 55-48, thanks to another Jenkins three pointer with 5:51 left. But, the Chargers came back one more time, knotting the game at 57 with 1:58 to play thanks to two made free throws from Carl Campbell.
A Chaney jumper put New Haven ahead 59-57 with 1:16 on the clock, but two Blaize made free throws knotted the game at 59 with 24 ticks left. The Chargers would make sure that the game did not get to overtime as Chaney drained an 18-foot jumper with one second left on the clock to seal the Charger victory.
Chaney led New Haven with 18 points and added eight rebounds, while Campbell and Kelvin Jackson both chipped in 10 points apiece.
Jenkins led the Panthers with 15 points, while Mike Mosby contributed a double double, scoring 12 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Cummings also reached double figures scoring 13 points.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, January 13 when they travel to Flushing, New York for a 7:30 pm showdown with Queens College.
