Men's Soccer Holds Off Hartwick, 2-1

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's soccer team won its fifth straight contest, topping Hartwick College, 2-1, this afternoon at Stiles Field. The Panthers improve to 6-4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Atlantic Soccer Conference. The Hawks fall to 4-6-2 and 1-1-1 in the ASC.

Adelphi looked strong in the first half, controlling the tempo of the game. It paid off in the 23rd minute as sophomore Patrick Figueiredo (Compinas, Brazil) tallied his fourth goal of the season on a feed from senior Ron Forman (Massapequa, N.Y.). Five minutes later, graduate student Marlon Bennett (Portmore, Jamaica) scored his first goal of the season and the ultimate game-winner, to give the Panthers a 2-0 cushion going into intermission.

The Hawks stepped up the intensity in the second half, holding a 10-4 shot advantage over the Panthers. Senior Tyler Hemming (Ontario, Canada) put Hartwick on the board in the 47th minute, scoring off of a corner kick to close to within one.

Goalkeeper Michael Hurley (Freeport, N.Y.) had an impressive game, making seven stops for Panthers to secure the win. Sophomore Joseph Gibson (Manheim, Pa.) had five saves for the Hawks.

With five consecutive victories, this matches the best win streak for the Panthers since the 1992 season when Adelphi finished 11-6-2. The longest overall win streak of nine straight occured during the 1987 season (14-4-2).

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, October 7, as they travel to Boca Raton, Florida to take on Florida Atlantic in a 7:00 pm confernce match-up. The game can be viewed live online via Gametracker.
